In other news, the world is round: Exercise Suppresses Appetite

This year I have decided to be thankful for ghrelin and peptide YY. No, these are not the two latest pseudo-angst ridden pop punk bands to emerge from around the country and take the flavor of the day charts by storm. What they are is two key appetite hormones that are suppressed when you work out. You heard right. Exercise suppresses your appetite!

What kind of exercise? I’m glad you asked ‘cause I was going to tell you anyway. This way it won’t seem so forward of me. Exercise, especially the aerobic variety like you get from 60 minutes on the treadmill, suppresses ghrelin and peptide YY. Non-aerobic exercise, like weightlifting only seems to affect the ghrelin.

Hey, don’t get on my case about the spelling of ‘ghrelin’. If I was in charge of things I never would have placed a ‘g-h-r’ in consecutive order. Whadya’ gonna do but roll with it?

The research was conducted with 11 university students over the course of three eight hour sessions somewhere in the United Kingdom. First they ran on the treadmill for 60 minutes then rested for seven hours. Then they lifted weights for 90 minutes and rested for one hour and thirty minutes. During the final session they didn’t do anything except whine about how bored they were.

Over the course of each session, the participants filled out surveys describing how hungry they were or weren’t at various points. Ghrelin and peptide YY were measured along the way. Based on the hunger ratings, both aerobic and resistance exercise suppressed appetite but aerobic to a larger extent.
